The print magazine + interactive audio-first site offer inclusive stories aimed at making concepts of audio accessible and connecting our global community.

It is edited and founded by One Thousand Birds, a leading design studio for audio. Hii is published and headquartered in NYC, with audio production studios in LA, Lisbon and Bogotá.

New York based, Madeleine is an actress, singer, and writer from Memphis, TN.

She earned her BFA in acting from The New School for Drama.

Her most recent short film “My Savior” recently premiered in NYC and is on the festival circuit.

Madeleine is in the process of directing “Last Night Was a Play”, an original play by Shae Sennet, premiering in NYC on November 15th.

Describe your ideal listening environment.

Laying on a friends plush living room rug, candles burning, maybe alone, maybe someone else is there 

What are your favorite sounds?

slide guitar, waves crashing, bjork’s voice, buzz of air conditioner, loved ones talking distantly as i drift off to sleep, laughter of babies, jazz in Central Park,

Which sound do you most like making?

Singing to myself, humming, laughing, reading lines aloud

Who do you like to talk to most?

My roommate’s cat, my GIRLS, new connections

What does it sound like in your head?

To myself, I sound raspy and foreign and mysterious

What was the first thing you heard today?

My white noise machine and my air conditioner, honking of horns outside my window

What sounds do you hear right now?

Cars passing, the electronic buzz of my kitchen appliances, the clacking of my keyboard

On what occasion do you become loud?

I’m an actor, It’s easy for me to get loud accidentally…I’ve gotten better about it…when I drink, I get so loud

On what occasion did you most recently whisper?

In rehearsal for the play I am directing.

Are you a good listener?

I love listening, I think we learn the most that way. I am a good listener and I am a vault 🔐

What podcast do you listen to the most?

“I Saw What You Did” It’s a movie podcast hosted by two hilairious women in the film industry.

Describe your ideal soundscape?

Sounds of waves crashing, synths, stringed and woodwind instruments, guitars, smooth and soft

What do you consider to be the most frightening sound?

A loud ambulance or the harsh screeching of the subway breaks

What do you consider the most overrated sound?

Olivia Roderigo I’m sorry

Whose speaking or singing voice do you most admire?

Caroline Polachek’s singing voice

Who is your hero of music or audio?

Maybe Amy Winehouse maybe

Which sound skill, talent or superpower do you possess?

I can harmonize with any note in any key on the spot…

Which sound skill, talent or superpower do you secretly possess?

Maybe songwriting. I am at last recording my music so it will be less of a secret

Which sound skill, talent or superpower do you most desire?

Being able to sing

What is your most vivid sound memory?

Any time I was in a musical and everyone on stage harmonized at once. It makes me cry to even think about. It’s so moving and deeply human.

Which of your possessions do you most associate with a sound?

My guitar, my records, unfortunately my phone

BC era monks harmonizing their choral chants

What advice did you regret not listening to?

Being more gracious with myself

Absence of things, prescience of everything else and nothing.

We all feel unheard constantly
