Sex, Candy, and Sage Green

Listen

Synesthesia is a collection of playlists curated by creative minds from an array of disciplines. Based on a unique prompt inspired by omnipresent themes familiar in our everyday lives, each playlist serves as a sonic representation of the individual’s interpretation of what an abstract concept means, feels, and sounds like to them

Miranda Watson is a Brooklyn-based clothing designer and founder of her eponymous clothing brand, which is dedicated to functionality, sustainability and diversity.

We create our garments using up-cycled and all-natural materials. The brand represents clean, minimal design with purposeful details, resulting in beautiful pieces for the everyday human.

Miranda Watson has been featured in Vogue, British Vogue, PAPER, Hii Magazine (Issue. 2!) and showcased at Vancouver Fashion Week for Autumn/Winter 2018.

Miranda Watson, on SAGE GREEN

Sage green is a complex color to me. It’s hardly just a color but an essence in so many aspects of life. I see it in three parts. The first is hope and joy with a touch of sadness, like the feeling of being in a really good place but an underlying feeling that something bad might happen. The second is an energetic bounce and playfulness. Finally, this color moves into a deep introspection and pain. But in that last part of pain is not suffering but a driving force to protest and change and make a difference.

‘Family Portraits’ by Miranda's mother and artist, Sharon Gold.

Anna of the North - Lovers

We open with ‘Lovers’ which to me is a very hopeful and joyous song, while also a little bit devastating. My girlfriend actually introduced me to this song, which really tracks in the best way. I think it starts to represent the sage green because it’s light and airy but there’s something about it that is a little bit sad and mysterious. I really like that for the start of this playlist because it sets a tone for what’s to come.

Marcy Playground - Sex and Candy

'Sex and Candy' being next in the playlist is so nostalgic for me and the green element is this tactile feeling of grittiness, almost dirt and is just really simple and pure. I respond to how refined and stripped down it sounds. It doesn’t need to do much but exist, which is also deeply how I feel about sage green.

Toro y Moi - Freelance

'Freelance' is a weird song. It has a lot of bounce and energy. I added it to this playlist because it adds a juxtaposition between the beginning melancholic intensity and then shifting into an almost childlike playfulness.

Patti Smith - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Ending with Patti Smith’s cover of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ is the final element in the three sections I think makes up sage green. It’s a soft, gritty darkness that takes me to a place of protest and agony but then you’re done and when you reset the playlist you’re back to hope. It’s circular and it’s beautiful.
