Paul Maxwell talks to Hii about how he went from listener to music maker in peak early aughts fashion
"There were several phases to my transition from listener to music maker. When I was really young I found a PS2 game called MTV Music Generator in a clearance bin that would let you reorganize stems from Snoop Dogg, Outkast and other artists’ songs and remix them into whatever you wanted. I was hooked and after that, I heard music in such a new and different way. I noticed more layers and nuances than ever before.
The other notable change came around middle school, when I first started going to the mall near me in Atlanta where dudes would go to the Apple store just to make beats in Logic. I would go in and just stand there watching them produce beats and watch what they did and maybe once or twice ask them questions. It sparked this thing in me that made me want to get Logic as soon as possible and start making my own beats. It was before a lot of online tutorials were available for music production. I think back to those times quite often as moments that truly sparked something in me to make music.
