Night Bugs

Listen

Hii Teams' Bi-Weekly Image Association Game. Hii intern MJ Ortiz points the Hii team towards Tajette O’Halloran’s photo of shrouded bugs coming into focus.

What song do you associate with the below image? Find out what our team thinks and listen to the accompanying playlist.

(Selected by MJ)

Kira:

[Bach - Goldberg Variations, Variation 1 a Clav]

This image makes me think of the iconic poster for The Silence of the Lambs, which then makes me think of the TV show adaptation “Hannibal”. The show utilizes classical music from composers like Bach, Chopin, and Mozart. The first time we see Hannibal in the show, he is dining alone, savoring a very ~ decadent ~ meal, and we hear Bach’s "Goldberg Variations: Aria" play.

Guin:

[Squarepusher - Detroit People Mover]

The buzzing, meandering synth textures are very much giving me insect vibes, and the otherwise eerie (almost haunting) quality of the soundscape feels like I'm looking through a window in the dead of night to the outside, the landscape bleeds into a blanketed darkness except for a few insects/particles that snap into nearsighted focus as they sit suspended, or otherwise fleetingly pass through a diffused light reflecting off of the glass of the window.

Julia:

[Special Death - Mirah]
The outreached hand gives the impression of someone trying to pull you into the darkness & my mind strayed to American Horror Story where I first heard my song choice

Torin:

[Rick Deitrick - Little Tujunga]

This image reminds me of seeing moths on the glass door at my grandma's place. A song I listened to during a recent trip there seems perfectly fitting for an evening listen looking out into the pitch black back yard, watching the moths flit around.

[Richard Greenan ft. Best Available Technology]

Reacting to purely the tone of the image, another recent pick up comes to mind: ‘Topple a River’ by Richard Greenan ft. Best Available Technology. Eerie and dark but also beautiful and strange and somewhat familiar.

MJ:

[Immortality - Anna Roxanne]

The hauntingly beautiful lighting and composition aside, I was enthralled by the grain of the speckles of dust in the photograph and thought they would be best served with a chamomile-toned ambience.

Cass:

[Haley Heynderickx - The Bug Collector]

In the photo, it looks like the hand in the background is reaching out to collect the insects, which instantly made me think of [this] song.

ABC:

[Domenique Dumont - La bataille de neige]

I love the energy of this song, the percussions throughout are so small and sweet and make me think of little bug footprints.

Spurge:

[Jessica Pratt - Fare Thee Well]

This photo is spooky and hazy so I thought of Jessica Pratt. Her music all feel’s like its in another room to me. It’s a bit far off and haunting which matches the photo.

[Portishead - The Rip]

Also, very haunting song to match the photo. The photo fits well with the trip-hop aesthetic imo.
