Pouch Envy Took Tracking Down This Jungle Record Into His Own Hands

Listen

Pouch Envy shares the story behind becoming obsessed with and then tracking down a hard-to-find jungle record

"Hi, this is Pouch Envy & today I'll be sharing my favorite dubplate and the story behind it.

My favorite white label is a deep-dive into my record collection - a 1994 jungle record released catalog number VDL6 under the Street Beats label. Both the artist and song name are unknown, however it was probably produced by Peshay and Photek, who alongside Goldie, were my favorite jungle producers back in early high school.

I was a big fan of collecting jungle records at the time, especially from labels like Moving Shadow, Certificate 18, Metalheadz and Good Looking Records — That pure AKAI S900 sampler jungle era between 94 - 98, before things became kinda two-step drum and bass.

I originally discovered Street Beats in Recofan, a record store in Shibuya, Tokyo and later downloaded the full label collection on Piratebay. I put everything on my old ipod and there was one record I became obsessed with - the A side of VDL6. There was no one selling the record on Discogs, so I had to message around 50 people who owned it. Out of the 50, I got 5 responses, with one person from Belgium ending up sending it to me.

A lot of dance music from the 90s was so forward-thinking that there's a whole global scene of producers and DJs all over the world just making perfect replications of the 90s sound - which is fine but to me it gets very tiring. Ever since Pinkpantheress blew up, jungle is one of the many dance genres making a big comeback and I'm happy to see it.

In high school I would spend hours in record stores across Tokyo, London, NYC, Berlin, Amsterdam, Milano and more. Searching for trip-hop, shoegaze and jungle felt like alchemy - discovering an old, innovative world hoping to recreate it with my own twist, while keeping the innovative mindset. I recently unlocked this childhood goal by releasing VIP4, a mixtape full of songs I wrote and sang, ran through custom-designed AI voice models, then remixed for the club.

Before I left Slovenia to study in the US, I made sure to rip the vinyl since there aren't any good quality versions available online and to this day, I haven't shared it with anyone.

Everytime I listen to it, it brings back ample memories of the past - if I had to sell my lifetime record collection, VDL6 would definitely be the one I wouldn't give up."

POUCH ENVY is a Brooklyn-based music producer, who draws influences from 90s Jungle, UK garage, Jersey Club, and their personal dreamscape.

By experimenting with quick changes in BPMs, melodies and genres, their songs and remixes (edits) relate to the same sensibilities as Gen Z---fast-paced, undefined and suitable for the diminished attention span in the digital life.

He recently started seen, a party series that highlights his favorite artists, djs and photographers.
